Key Races, Ballot Measures Nationwide Could Preview 2024 Election

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The importance of today’s elections stretches beyond our community and state. Voters across the country will be weighing in on important races, issues and ballot measures that could shape the 2024 elections, like abortion access.

Many eyes are on Richmond, VA and the Commonwealth’s races at the state level. 100 House seats and 40 Senate seats are on the ballot for Virginia’s General Assembly Tuesday.

Republicans are looking to flip the Senate and maintain their House majority. Their performance will be an indication and an evaluation for first-term Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s and his priorities, like a 15-week abortion ban.

Virginia can be viewed as a bellwether for next year and can tell how abortion rights are shaping American politics ahead of the 2024 election.

Democrats are watching closely to see if they can run on abortion access like they did in the 2022 midterms, which proved to be an effective strategy following the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

If Republicans win the Virginia Senate, they’d win a supermajority and would have no roadblocks pushing their agenda.

Abortion is also on the ballot in Ohio, where voters will decide whether to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution.

Gubernatorial races, including Kentucky and Mississippi, will be watched closely Tuesday evening as well.
