Memorial Day in the VI

On May 27, 2019, the Virgin Islands Office of Veterans Affairs and the American Legion will partner once again to observe Memorial Day 2019.  This collaboration will commemorate all Veterans who have served our country and since passed on and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. 

There will be activities on all three islands in honor of those Veterans. 

Listed below are the dates, times and locations of this year’s events:

May 25&26        All day  Placement of flags on Veterans Graves        STT, STJ, and STX 

May 26             2pm       Graveside Ceremony (Glestan McIntosh)     Kingshill Cemetery, STX 

May 26              3pm       Memorial Day Ceremony                          Cruz Bay St. John (Frank Powell Park)

May 27                          9:30am   Memorial Day March                               Frederiksted, St. Croix (Post Office)    

May 27                          9:30am  Memorial Day March                               Charlotte Amalie, St.Thomas (Cemetery #1)

On St. Croix, the procession will start at the Frederiksted Post Office Square and proceedto the Frederiksted Cemetery for the gravesideceremony. After the graveside ceremony we will proceed to the Frederiksted waterfront (in front of the Verne I. Richards Park) for the seaside service. The Official Commemoration Ceremony will be held on the platform directly adjacent to the Verne I. Richards Veterans Memorial Park on Strand Street, Frederiksted immediately after.  Keynote Speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Beresford Edwards. 

On St. Thomas, will begin with a graveside ceremony at Western Cemetery#1. A procession will follow starting from Western Cemetery#1 via Kronprindsens Gade, making a right before the Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, proceeding to the Emil White bust on the waterfront for the seaside ceremony, then on to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Park via mainstreet. The Official Ceremony will be held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Park immediately after. Keynote Speaker will be Mrs. Deborah Henneman-Smith. 

On St. JohnThere will be no march on St. John. The official ceremony will take place at the Frank Powell Park starting at 3:30pm Sunday, May 26, 2019.
